Illustration 2D & 3D
This personal project from our design studio was an excellent exercise in exploring shapes and the transition between 2D and 3D illustration. By focusing on basic geometric forms, we challenged ourselves to create compelling characters and scenes that highlighted our ability to work fluidly across both dimensions. It allowed us to refine our skills and push the boundaries of creative expression through shape-based design.
Summary
Transforming 2D illustrated characters made from geometric shapes into a dynamic 3D scene was both challenging and exciting. The project features three determined policemen and one cunning villain, all built from simple shapes: triangle, square, circle, and freeform. Shapes are integral to our creative process, as every project begins with a basic form. This time, we dedicated an entire project to exploring geometric shapes, creating a mini-series of 2D and 3D characters, each representing different archetypes. Also, the sketches were included in the presentation, as they had a huge impact on the final design.
Challenge
The first vector illustrations for this project were initially created in early 2020 as part of a personal creative exploration. At the time, the focus was on developing a unique and captivating visual style through 2D vector work. However, in 2023, we decided to revisit and evolve the project by transforming it into a 3D experience. The real challenge lay in faithfully preserving the intricate details and characteristics of the original 2D illustrations while transitioning them into 3D. This required meticulous attention to maintaining the integrity of the designs, ensuring that every element from the original flat structure was translated seamlessly into a more dynamic, three-dimensional form. The goal was not only to retain the essence of the 2D illustrations but to enhance and enrich them in a way that fully captured the complexity and depth of the original concept.
Solutions
We meticulously preserved the original details and successfully crafted four distinct characters in 3D. This process served as an excellent exercise in translating 2D art into a fully realized 3D format. Every aspect of the original illustrations was carefully considered, from shapes and textures to colors and proportions, ensuring that the essence of the characters remained intact. By respecting the original designs, we brought the characters to life in a new dimension, paying special attention to how elements like depth, shading, and lighting would enhance their visual impact. This transformation required a careful balance between staying true to the 2D versions while embracing the new possibilities of 3D modeling, resulting in dynamic characters that retained their original charm.
